Private Equity

Badenoch’s second investment in November 2015 was in The Borders Distillery Company Limited which trades as The Borders Distillery. Badenoch is the lead investor in a diverse and international group of shareholders who together have invested £15m.

Following a two-year restoration of an historic building in the middle of Hawick, the first Scotch Whisky distillery in the Scottish Borders since 1837 began distilling in March of 2018. The building has subsequently won many awards including the 2019 Civic Trust Award for the built environment.

Whilst the Scotch Whisky is maturing, the Distillery is actively building its commercial profile in export markets consistent with the Badenoch investment philosophy; MISSA, ‘Made in Scotland Sold Abroad’.  In addition, the distillery has developed Kerr’s Borders Gin and Puffing Billy Steam Vodka, entirely made in the Borders Distillery using barley sourced exclusively from the Borders Growers and Distillers Group.

“The founders are delighted to have the support and enthusiasm of an experienced international shareholder group led by Badenoch. Based in Hawick, a town with a long and valued reputation for high quality manufacturing, the distillery employs more than a dozen people with the distillers all recruited locally and trained from scratch. Building back distilling in the Borders is long term project and we are looking forward to the future”

John Fordyce, Managing Director of The Borders Distillery Company Limited
