Lord Offord of Garvel

Founder and Chairman

Malcolm Offord is the Founder and Chairman of Badenoch & Co. He was educated at Ardgowan Primary School and Greenock Academy and graduated from The University of Edinburgh in Law, following which he embarked on a successful 26-year career in The City of London.

Malcolm’s extensive financial career started with six years at the merchant bank Lazard, learning his trade in the Corporate Finance department specialising in mergers and acquisitions. In 1994 he began his private equity investing career with 3i plc followed by two years at Bankers Trust Company of New York where he was Managing Director of European Acquisition Finance. 

In 1998 he joined Charterhouse as a Partner and remained there for sixteen years investing four European private equity funds before retiring as Senior Partner in December 2013. During this period, Malcolm invested £2 billion of private equity capital in eight UK companies and achieved successful exits equating to 2.8x invested capital. Within this portfolio, revenues increased by 2.5x and employment by 2.0x.

On 4th October 2021, Malcolm Offord was appointed a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State to the Scotland Office.  He was created Baron Offord of Garvel, of Greenock in the County of Renfrewshire and introduced to the House of Lords on 14th October 2021 as Lord Offord of Garvel. He was also appointed a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department of Business and Trade on 24th April 2023.
